Thredbo Landslide

In the aftermath of the Thredbo landslide in August 1997, Shirley Consulting Engineers were engaged by the Legal Representation Office of NSW, to act on behalf of the families of the victims, and to provide an “independent” view of the tragedy.

The firm was also requested to advise on the likely causes of the landslide and subsequently to give expert evidence to the Coronial Inquiry into the deaths of 18 persons.

Whilst documentation of the facts / circumstances surrounding the landslide was primarily carried out by others, the work undertaken by the firm included a detailed evaluation of the causes of the landslide and relevant geological aspects; the firm also assisted by providing expert evidence to the Coronial Inquiry following the tragedy, as well as assisting with the detailed submissions.
